It’s interesting to watch the fallout from the political events of 2016: Brexit, a new UK Prime Minister, and now a new President of the United States. After the results come in people respond in a variety of ways. In past elections there has seemed to be a sense of hope and optimism, that was certainly the case when Barrack Obama was elected. What’s intriguing, and perhaps worrying, is that both the Brexit result and the election of Donald Trump seem to have been followed by uncertainty, protest and worry. But will anything really change? Can world leaders actually have an impact?
I wonder whether we can get exasperated with our world leaders? Even well-intentioned leaders seem incapable of implementing election promises. They are dogged by arguments and opposition, and bogged down by the processes of the Senate or Parliament. This frustrates their plans, delays actions and often causes compromise. Our leaders do not have ultimate power. While in some ways this may be a good thing it does not inspire us with confidence, or convince us that real change can happen.
Leaders are also hampered by their lack of knowledge. When making promises they don’t know all the facts and can’t make reliable predictions; they seem to have ‘feet of clay’.
I’m not sure whether the thought of a world leader being limited is reassuring or frustrating. I wonder what the world would be like if we really did have a leader who could achieve their aims.
Jesus is Different
After his resurrection Jesus said, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth
Matthew 28:18
The Bible teaches that, however world leaders act, God is ultimately in control (Daniel 5:21). One day soon God will send Jesus back to the earth to set up his kingdom, which will sort out all the world's problems once and for all. It is the only solution and it is certain!
People however are jaded by the repeated failure of human leaders and so are understandable sceptical. They doubt that Jesus will succeed with this fantastic challenge and ask ‘what will he do?’ and ‘how will he do that? It is important to realise that Jesus will be like no other leader. First of all he is totally free from any corruption or self-interest. But also, uniquely, he is God’s Son and representative, and with God’s backing nothing will be too hard for him.
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee
Jeremiah 32:17
Complete Power
When he rules, Jesus will have unlimited power. We find this prophesied in the Old Testament and explained in the New.
And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed
Daniel 7:14
Which (God) wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come
Ephesians 1:20-21
No one will be able to cause him to delay, compromise or cancel his policies. Hi will rule with total authority and power. Moreover, no one will have reason to complain that anything he does is unjust or unfair.
I think Jesus Christ is the leader we need. Are you ready for him?
